The Bail Project Shuts Down After Helping Suspect Who Shot Las Vegas Man

Bail Project shuts down

*The celebrity-backed The Bail Project has reportedly shut down amid a lawsuit filed by a man who was shot days after the organization helped free the gunman.

Rashawn Gaston-Anderson reportedly has a long rap sheet that includes attempted grand larceny, carrying a concealed weapon, felony burglary, and auto theft, according to TMZ citing 8NewsNow. He had been arrested on burglary charges when The Bail Project posted a $3,000 bond for him last December. Six days after his release, Gaston-Anderson shot a Las Vegas man 7 times.

The victim, Chengyan Wang, is now taking legal action against The Bail Project.

The company is backed by a slew of A-list celebs including John Legend, Danny Glover and Richard Branson. Per TMZ, the district attorney who prosecuted Gaston-Anderson said, “One can say, in a sense, they are vouching for the person.”

Wang’s lawsuit reportedly accuses The Bail Project of not fully examining the shooter’s background before posting bail for him.

Since 2021, the group has reportedly posted bonds for 51 people in the Las Vegas area. As TMZ reports, The Bail Project’s work in the state is in violation of the law as they are not registered with the Nevada Division of Insurance.

Gaston-Anderson reportedly copped a plea in Wang’s case, on charges of attempted robbery, and mayhem with enhancements for using a deadly weapon. He received a 7-18 year sentence.

The Bail Project caught heat around this time last year after they contributed to the bond of a man who was later arrested and charged with the murder of a man in a drug deal gone wrong. We reported previously that the Indiana mother of the victim spoke out against the organization because she believes the killing could’ve been prevented.

Nikki Sterling is the mother of Dylan McGinnis, who was murdered in October 2021 after going with a friend to get drugs. At the drug deal, McGinnis, who was not there for drugs only to go with a friend, was sitting in the car when Travis Lang opened fire on him and the female Friend over money. The female was shot in the leg but McGinnis, unfortunately, lost his life.

Sterling was shocked to find out that The Bail Project helped free Lang for his previous offenses. Lang was originally arrested for possession of cocaine and three felony charges of breaking and entering but was bailed out with money from The Bail Project and other money raised by his family in January 2021.

The Bail Project released a statement at the time claiming they aren’t responsible for Lang’s actions.
