*On Wednesday (12/14/22), famed singer Patti Austin joined SiriusXM Urban View host Joe Madison and shared why she’s boycotting Russia, spoke about Brittney Griner’s release, and said what happened when she sat next to Vladimir Putin the last time she was in Russia.
“I feel about Russia like I felt about South Africa during apartheid. These are places you must boycott. These are places you cannot go. You have to boycott and you have to speak up,” Austin told Madison.

Patti Austin: The people who are trying to take it over do not care about the world. They only care about themselves. That’s all they care about.
Host, Joe Madison: You are in total agreement that this is no time for celebrities, period, or tourists to be traveling to Russia. I mean, look, it sounds like a stupid question.
Patti Austin: You cannot. You cannot. And also as an artist, I feel about Russia like I felt about South Africa during apartheid. These are places you must boycott. These are places you cannot go. But it’s not even enough to boycott. You have to boycott and you have to speak up. We’ve got these magnificent athletes in the World Cup who are putting their, literally their lives. Forget a reputation. Europeans are very worried about their reputation, and they brought that crap with ’em when they came to the Americas. ‘Ooh, my reputation.’ No. What are you actually doing? As you always say, what are you doing?
Host, Joe Madison: What are you gonna do about it? Yeah.
Patti Austin: What are you gonna do about it? Are you gonna stare silently? Because if you sit there silently, you are complicit. So you have to speak up. You can’t just say, I’m not gonna work in Russia. I’m not gonna work in Europe. So y’all stop running around wearing swastikas again. Are you freaking kidding me? And trying to call yourself a new Nazi. You’re just a closet Nazi that felt brave enough to come out this week. That’s what’s going on. And these suckers are everywhere. They’re in your police department, they’re in your army, they’re in your government, they’re in your drugstore, they’re up the street, they’re in your church. They’re everywhere. And they have been emboldened.
