Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Kristen Bell make couponing criminal in “Queenpins.” Inspired by a true story, the outrageous comedy follows a bored housewife and vlogger who turn a hobby into a $40 million counterfeit coupon caper.
We talked to the female duo about clipping coupons, covers and Costco.
Q: What items do you refuse to buy without a discount or coupon?
KHB: I don’t buy anything from Bed Bath & Beyond without a coupon. When I see people at the counter and they don’t have a coupon…I’m like, ‘don’t you know if you sign up for their email, they’ll send you a coupon EVERYDAY?! How can you not have a coupon?’
KB:…And if you see anyone else’s junk mail they’ve disposed of – because that’s completely legal – check through it and see if it has a 20% off coupon, those are gold! You need a humidifier, you need a duvet cover…you could be saving 50 bucks sometimes!
Q: Who’s the “stockpiler” in your family and what are they piling?
KB: I stockpile a lot of stuff for the kids and day-to-day necessities. I like to make sure we never run out of paper towels, toilet paper or tissues – I have a lot of people with allergies in my home, plus I didn’t get rid of the dogs!
My husband (Dax Shepard) has a more interesting relationship with stockpiling because we grew up in Michigan so we always had a basement and going to Costco and Sam’s Club is very familiar…plus, it’s a better value. My husband grew up with such a scarcity factor he’s physically uncomfortable if he doesn’t see what he needs. For instance, he would never buy one tube of toothpaste, he needs to see 15 tubes in the drawer just to feel safe.
KHB: I think we have a Costco way outside of London…in London houses are so small. There’s not a lot of stockpiling. I’m sure people in New York City would say the same thing. We don’t have the space to stockpile.
But now my boyfriend does have a Costco membership, so I went to Costco for the first time as an adult and I was like, ‘this is heaven!’
