Harp (Idris), a pilot, is sent into a deadly militarized zone to work for Leo (Mackie), an officer, tasked to locate a doomsday device before the insurgents do. EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas spoke to the fellas about cigars, co-stars and Whole Foods.
Q: What’s one thing you learned about your co-star while filming “Outside the Wire?”
AM: I learned Damson is a consummate professional. I look at acting in movies like dating…the first day you figure out who the person is, the second day you learn a little more, decide if you should go on a third date, and then decide if you are going to get involved with them. Every day I saw a lot of myself in Damson. A lot of people don’t have the work ethic and hustle. A lot of people don’t have the ability to set themselves aside and step into and do what’s best for the character. I was impressed to see him be able to humble himself enough to let the character come through.
DI: I learned Anthony Mackie really loves cigars! And I learned where I want to be in the years going forward and the type of mentality I want to be in – in order to stay sane in this industry. A lot of people in this industry have done the same amount of movies Mackie has but they’re not happy. To look at someone who is happy [like Anthony]…that’s the journey I want to accomplish one day too.
Q: When’s the last time someone told you to do something and you did the opposite instead?
AM: I feel like that’s every day [humorously].
DI: I was in Whole Foods – I don’t know how this guy recognized me with a mask, shades and a hat on – and this guy asked for a picture but I had my Birkenstock’s on and my toes were looking really ashy, so I wasn’t going to take a picture with those toes!
