*The controversy surrounding Sen. Tom Cotton’s “necessary evil” comment about slavery was low hanging fruit for “The Daily Show’s” Trevor Noah.
The Arkansas Republican told an outlet in his hometown that he’s opposed to a proposed law that would mandate the teaching of The New York Times’ 1619 Project in schools. He said it would framed the U.S. as an “irredeemably corrupt, rotten and racist country” and would teach students to “hate America.” He then said of slavery, “As the Founding Fathers said, it was the necessary evil upon which the union was built, but the union was built in a way, as Lincoln said, to put slavery on the course to its ultimate extinction (unquote).
After his slavery comments were met with outrage from people who accused him of agreeing with the founding fathers, Cotton tried to say that he was only stating what the founders believed, not what he believes.
