THE REAL Hosts to Harvey Weinstein’s Lawyer: ‘Male Violence Is Not Our Fault’ – VIDEO

*On Monday, Feb. 10, the hosts of The Real discuss Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer, who said during an interview that she would never put herself in a position to be sexually assaulted. Co-host Jeannie Mai wants it out there that “male violence is not our fault,” and it’s time to stop victim-blaming, and the ladies talk about ways to change the culture.

Then everyone recaps last night’s Academy Awards and discusses how the ceremony managed to infuse some diversity into an awards show with very little inclusion. And Extra correspondent Cheslie Kryst drops in to give her red carpet report, including why she wishes actress Julia Butters had brought her a snack!

The ladies then talk about Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s recent discussion with Oprah about going to therapy with her husband, former President Barack Obama, in the early days of their marriage. Co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley feels that it shows they have a great partnership, and co-host Amanda Seales explains why therapy has such a stigma in the black community.

If you were being robbed, would you fight back? Co-host Adrienne Houghton says she would just try to be safe, but she has a story about her mom, Nilda, who didn’t take too kindly to being held up on the subway when Adrienne was a child!

The Hosts Reply Back To Harvey Weinstein’s Lawyer – Male Violence Is Not Our Fault

Amanda Seales: It assumes that anyone who’s been in this situation did so because of negligence –

Tamera Mowry-Housley: They “deserve” – yeah.

Amanda:  Or ignorance, etc. I know that there’s been many times where you think you’re with someone who’s trustworthy, or you think you’re in an environment that’s safe and it is not the case. So, for her to say this, I feel like it’s the type of lies that people tell themselves. And she clearly has to lie to herself every day to represent this reprehensible man.

[The Real audience applauds]

Adrienne Houghton: Exactly.

Amanda: And by the way, ain’t nothing wrong with him with this walker!

Jeannie Mai: Right? Right!

Amanda: I’m with Plies. I’m with Plies. Plies was like, “Ain’t nothing wrong with you, man! Ain’t nothing wrong with you.”

Jeannie: You’re not wrong about that. First of all, 41% of women that are assaulted are with somebody –

Jeannie, Amanda, Tamera: That they know!

Jeannie: So, just start there, ok? But the reason why this is so dangerous that she said this is because this narrative suggests that women – the victims – are at fault, not the criminal. When you think about rape or assault cases, every time they tell you, “What was she wearing? What time of the day was it? Was she consuming alcohol?” Which then puts a culture of fear out there that you can’t have a drink. That you can’t go out to an audition. That you can’t go grocery shopping by yourself.

[The Real audience applauds]

Adrienne: Because then that gives someone permission to do something wrong to you.

Jeannie: It really frustrated me when I heard this. Listen Linda, when it comes to auditions, when it comes to what you wear, when it comes to how many drinks you have – auditions do not rape you. What you wear does not rape you.

Amanda: Correct.

Jeannie: Going out for a job does not rape you. Male violence is not our fault.

[The Real audience applauds]

Jeannie: Stop blaming the victim.
