*EURweb correspondent Monique Loveless recently sat down for a one on one with actor Russell Hornsby at the NBC TCA’s. Hornsby talks about his new challenging role as Lincoln in “Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector” and kept it very real.
EUR: Walk me through how the role came about and your thoughts about Lincoln Rhyme.
Russell: He’s a brilliant mind and criminal savant. Through my 25 years of experience in this industry, I was able to go above and beyond the call when it comes to this challenging character. Not only was this role a challenging role but I was honored to be offered the role and not have to audition for it.
EUR: What did you take away from Lincoln personally?
Russell: I’ve gained an immense amount of patience that I did not have before. Because he is a person with a disability and who has to depend on others to help him and to get what he needs. I really understand the whole not sweating the small stuff, I realize what that means. I ain’t going to let know one take advantage of me but I ain’t tripping.

EUR: Since you are playing a paraplegic role, how many hours was it before you were able to even stand up?
Russell: When we shot the pilot I laid in the bed for a long time. Even when scenes were changing I’d lay there because I just wanted that sense. So there would be lighting that could take anywhere from a half-hour, forty-five minutes to an hour and I’d just sit there. It’s also the first role where I don’t bring my phone on to set because I don’t want the distraction, I really have to focus everything into doing this role.
EUR: What did Lincoln Rhyme’s disability teach you?
Russell: That there are other things you can focus on and the whole notion of peace and be still. To be still is to find peace. I listen a lot more to people than I did before. I can hear things and see things because I am paying attention to more. It’s enhanced my life overall.
EUR: If you had to choose a black woman lead for a different perspective of the story who would it have been?
Russell: Tayonna Parris would have been an interesting choice. Someone younger, kind of green around the gills.
