*A palace insider claims Prince Charles never wanted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to step down from their roles, as he envisioned working with both his sons.
“Charles has always envisioned working with both of his sons and their families in the future,” says a close source, PEOPLE reports. The leaner monarchy that has been proposed by Charles for cost-cutting purposes “included Harry and whoever he married,” adds a palace insider.
The royal family will reportedly work with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to help them get to a place where they feel comfortable and happy, the report states.

“For public and also for deeply private reasons, the Queen, and Prince Charles and Prince William will want to heal the rift,” royal historian Robert Lacey tells PEOPLE. “There is anger at the moment. But if Harry and Meghan are prepared to enter into the spirit of this new arrangement” —making sure not to appear to cash in on their titles and reputations—“I think the Queen, Charles and William will [support them]. Each of them, for different reasons, will want to heal what has gone wrong.”
We previously reported, Harry and Meghan made the bombshell announcement last week that they are stepping back news as “senior” members of the royal family.
Queen Elizabeth II addressed the #Megxit controversy on Monday, following a family meeting at her Sandringham estate.
“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” the Queen said in a statement, via E! News. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”
Queen Elizabeth also noted that “Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.”
Meghan Markle bounced to Canada following their big announcement, but Prince Harry remains in England as he has responsibilities in the U.K.
