*Officer Breann Leath of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was shot and killed when she tried to save a woman’s life on a domestic violence call. Now, her parents have released a statement to the community in a YouTube video.

The suspect, 27-year-old Elliahs Dorsey, has since been arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail, on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder. When the officers arrived in the apartment complex and knocked on the door, shots were fired from the inside. As the other officers retreated from the hallway, Leath was already shot. It was only later that officers were able to enter the apartment and remove the female victim inside as well as Leath who was shot in the hallway. The woman in the apartment is in stable condition and expected to survive. Officer Leath was fatally shot and is survived by her young son.

Her father, Tom Leath, thanked everyone for the outpouring of love and support in the YouTube video. He said, “Even though she’s our daughter, I know she’s a piece of the community so I’m very thankful for the kind words.”

“Breann loves this city and she loved what she did. And as a mom it’s a big deal to see your children recognize their life-long dreams. And Breann did it. She did what she wanted to do,” added her mom, Jennifer Leath.

“Her nickname was breezy. She was like the wind, she was just a force. She would come in the room, definitely knew she was there,” Jennifer said.
