Largest Black-Owned Kentucky Bourbon Distillery to Debut in Lexington

Fresh Bourbon Distilling

*NationwideFresh Bourbon Distilling Co. proudly announces the upcoming development of the a new 34,000 square feet distillery in Lexington, KY and release of a new beverage alcohol spirits line, Fresh Spirits, marking multiple firsts for African Americans in the KY Bourbon industry.

Sean Edwards, Lexington native and African American entrepreneur, registered the company in 2017 and immediately began work on crafting unique Bourbons, whiskeys and other spirits as well as opening a distillery in his hometown.

Fresh Bourbon’s Master Distiller, who is the first Kentucky African American Master Distiller post slavery, developed the exclusive spirit recipes and is overseeing production.

Their products are mashed, fermented, distilled, matured and will ultimately be bottled entirely in Kentucky. The unique recipes are currently being produced under contract through Hartfield & Co. Distillery in Paris, KY. Fresh Spirits uses only the highest quality ingredients to produce ultra-premium beverages.

The company will secure a location near downtown Lexington’s Distillery District and will begin construction of the distillery later this year. In addition to being the primary production location, the distillery will offer tours and guided tastings plus include an event space.

Fresh Bourbon launches late 2020 which will be followed by the release of Fresh Whiskey, Fresh Gin, and Fresh Agave coinciding with the opening of the distillery. The Master Distiller’s identity is expected to be announced at product launch.

“For nearly three years, we have been diligently developing an authentic and unique Bourbon and spirits line. We chose not to buy Bourbon from someone else and just placed our name on a bottle. We have been very intentional and deliberate in crafting our spirits – from the mash bills up – and also our Fresh Bourbon team, including in selecting our Master Distiller. We are excited to share with the world what we have created with the world,” stated Edwards.

“Bourbon is a mainstay of Kentucky’s economy, and I am thrilled to see this step toward greater inclusivity in this iconic industry,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear added. “Creating opportunities for all Kentuckians is essential, and our administration aims to pave the way for progress. I sincerely thank Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co. for choosing to build its distillery in our state.”

Round 1 financing is complete with round 2 financing close to finalization. In the upcoming months, Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co. will announce product specifics, market launch date, Master Distiller’s identity, distillery location, company partners and additional details.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said the company is bringing to the surface an important part of the distilling industry’s history.

“Congratulations to Sean Edwards and everyone at Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co.,” Mayor Gorton said. “The history of African Americans in the distilling industry is often forgotten. Fresh Bourbon is reviving that history and giving it new life in our Distillery District.”

Commerce Lexington Inc. President and CEO Bob Quick said the project is great news for the bourbon industry as a whole.

“We are very excited to welcome Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co. to Lexington,” Quick said. “Kentucky has seen a surge in tourism due to the rapidly-growing bourbon industry, and this announcement will not only further strengthen our economy, but also the commonwealth’s hold on the title of top producer of bourbon in the world. Congratulations to Sean and Tia Edwards on this wonderful announcement, and our team looks forward to working with them on this project.”
