*Today it was revealed by the National Transportation Safety Board/NTSB that the helicopter that crashed with Kobe and Gianna Bryant and seven other people aboard, was not equipped with a terrain avoidance and warning system (TAWS).
It was also not outfitted with a flight data recorder (FDR) or cockpit voice recorder (CVR).
The NTSB says it previously made 2 safety recommendations to the FAA.
- Require all helicopters carrying 6 passengers or more to have TAWS
- Require all rotorcraft to be equipped with a FDR and CVR

As you can probably guess, the FAA did not take either recommendation. The NTSB says those instruments would’ve helped in this instance.
Heere’s the sad part. The NTSB says the helicopter’s “high energy impact crash” was about 20 to 30 feet below the top of the hillside.
Obviously having a terrain avoidance and warning system on bboard would have made a lot of difference.
