How Drew Dixon Felt About Oprah Backing Out Of The “On The Record” Documentary
Drew Dixon: I was devastated when Oprah backed out. It was like the floor fell out from under me. I was also– let me go back 6 months before that happened. The day I found out that she watched a rough cut of the film in June of 2019 and she loved it, I cried real live tears of joy. I admire Oprah Winfrey. I admired her then and I admire her now. I admire her as a black woman, as a survivor, as a creator, as somebody who uses their platform to push the dialogue forward in so many different important ways. I am a fan of hers. I remain a fan of hers and I felt so safe knowing that she was part of the project. And so it was devastating, when right before Sundance, she exited. But, I also believe in God and I believe that in some ways it was my destiny, and Sherri’s destiny and Sil Lai’s destiny to realize this is our journey… and we aren’t hiding behind anybody. We don’t need anybody but our self and our truth to carry on. And, so now I am clear that I am enough, Sherri is enough, Sil Lai is enough, we are enough. And, so I believe things happen for a reason. I am honored she was a part of it. I’m grateful to her for maintaining her faith in our stories and supporting us as survivors. And I am sort of moving forward and thinking about the women whose names are not Oprah Winfrey and whose abusers names are not Russell Simmons and hoping that this conversation includes all of us.
