For The Record: Lee Bailey & Steven ‘The Music Man’ Ivory Remember Bill Withers – LISTEN

*The passing of Bill Withers is the topic of our latest “For The Record” podcast. Host Lee Bailey and “The Music Man,” Steven Ivory take a moment to remember the artist behind the legendary hits “Lovely Day,” “Lean On Me,” “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Use Me.”

Ivory, who has interviewed Withers many times throughout his career, remembers a “sweet” man who could also be a “curmudgeon” at times. The singer’s acoustic vibe stood apart from the R&B mainstream in 1971, the year he entered the business with his debut single “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Both Ivory and Bailey, who was a radio DJ at the time, remember how black radio had to warm up to Withers’ sound before fully embracing his stripped-down, earthy approach.

Ivory also shares revelatory anecdotes behind some of Withers’ biggest hits, why the musician hated his time at Columbia Records and the reason he stepped back from the business. Join “For the Record” as we celebrate the life, the artistry and the classic hits of Bill Withers.
