The singer’s acoustic vibe stood apart from the R&B mainstream in 1971, the year he entered the business with his debut single “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Both Ivory and Bailey, who was a radio DJ at the time, remember how black radio had to warm up to Withers’ sound before fully embracing his stripped-down, earthy approach.
