Election Day from a Politician’s Perspective

*As the saying goes, in order to understand someone, you must first walk in their shoes. This mindset is extremely helpful in helping me understand some of the complexities in others. This being an election year, it’s time to examine the candidates given the responsibility of representing us all. Although I don’t know any politicians personally, with just a little imagination, I have come to some intriguing conclusions. The following are some of my findings.

First of all, I understand the time & financial investment it takes to land this job. So the pressure to curry favor with as many people as possible is job number one. It can almost be compared to getting views on your YouTube channel. Saying or doing the right thing means likes and subscriptions as every move made is under a microscope.

So I understand why they promise things they will likely not deliver. In order to get votes and yes even money from any and everyone they can. If their campaign is successful, they have rocked their interview and landed their dream job. Priority number one then becomes holding on to their job for as long as possible. Given that our senators and representatives have to re-apply every two years, their motives become clear. I’m focusing on our lawmakers because the presidency is some what of a temp job. With that in mind, our lawmakers will always focus on those whom help them keep their job. Wouldn’t you do the same?

I make this point not because I condone this, but because you must know the rules if you hope to win the game. There are no points for being naive. So, to get a lawmaker’s attention, we need to become a coalition that helps them secure their job or one that becomes a threat to it. Inactivity is the fastest way to get ignored. And while they are supposed to represent all 300 million Americans, we all have our favorites.

Policy has never changed without action. And is usually a long and complex struggle. But always better than accepting the status quo. Our lawmakers have the job of leading us and if they are bad at their job, our job is to fire them. We get this opportunity once every two years in November.

“If the blind lead the blind, we all fall into a pit” as quoted by Jesus in Luke 6 verse 39. Let’s rise instead. If not this November, we will have to wait two more years to act.
