Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes is Taking Over Ahmaud Arbery Shooting Case

*Georgia’s attorney general attorney Chris Carr has appointed Cobb District Attorney Joyette Holmes as a new prosecutor in the Ahmaud Arbery case, according to reports.

Channel 2′s Richard Belcher was the first to break the story, writing on Twitter “Ch2 has learned AG Chris Carr will name Cobb DA Joyette Holmes to take over prosecution of Ahmaud Arbery murder case. We spoke to Joyette Holmes. She did not deny, just referred us to current special prosecutor, Thomas Durden. Official announcement expected today.”

Many expressed their excitement to the news while others noted their fear that Holmes could be Judge Mammy Tammy 2.0, but we won’t know for sure until she starts talking forgiveness and hugging it out with oppressors and being a “good Christian” and turning the other cheek to racism. The white supremacists could be writing her script as I type this.

Meanwhile, others find it suspect that after months of protecting the suspected white supremacists who murdered Arbery, a Black woman has now been “appointed” to handle the case.

We previously reported… Arbery is the 25-year-old Georgia man who was gunned down earlier this year by two suspected white supremacists near his hometown in Brunswick, Ga. He was unarmed when he was fatally shot in the Satilla Shores neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia, on February 23.

Travis McMichael, 34, and his father, Gregory, 64, a retired cop, had seen Arbery running in the area and decided to arm themselves, chase him down in a pickup truck and kill him.

According to The Brunswick News, Travis and Gregory followed Ahmaud and demanded that he stop and talk to them, believing him to be a burglary suspect. At some point, they got out of their truck, confronted him and after a struggle over the shotgun with Travis, Arbery was shot at least twice and killed.

State officials seemed to pave the way for the father and son to escape justice but after a video was posted online last week showing the moment Ahmaud was fatally shot, both Travis and Gregory were arrested and charged May 7 with murder and aggravated assault.

Carr confirmed on Twitter that he tapped Holmes to lead the case, with one user responding “You mean once public outcry reached critical mass, you decided to do what should have been done months ago. “Aggravated assault & murder” charges don’t cut it either. This was a hate crime, and should be prosecuted as such.”

Another commented, “Will there also be an investigation into why it took so long for arrests and prosecution to begin?”

A third noted, “Just keep cycling though judges until you get one you like. Justice at it’s finest. #criminals”
