A Chicago mother was arrested after she passed out while viewing her dead daughter’s body at a hospital.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Nyisha Beemon allegedly became aggressive with officers while identifying the body of her daughter, Jaya Beemon, at Chicago Medical Center.

Jaya, a nursing student at Malcolm X College, was one of five people shot inside a convenience store when three men entered and opened fire on February 25th.

Beemon said she was told she “wasn’t grieving appropriately,” so she was arrested for resisting arrest and charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery on an officer.

“They said I wasn’t grieving appropriately,” Beemon told the Sun-Times “That’s a lie. Grieving is not against the law.”

It seems the Cook County state attorney’s office agrees with her about that, as the charges were dropped two days before Jaya’s funeral. The state attorney’s office had promised to “quickly dismiss the charges, so that a grieving mother can mourn the loss of her daughter in peace. ”

Beemon is now hoping the charges will be removed from her record.

Chicago Police Department director of public engagement, Glen Brooks said the Chicago Police Department “regretted the circumstances that led to the arrest and shared our deepest condolence for the loss of her daughter, Jaya.”

The incident is reportedly being investigated internally.

Meanwhile, Chicago police released surveillance footage showing three suspects open fire inside a foot mart, allegedly missing the intended target but wounding four and killing 18-year-old Jaya. Peep the Twitter video embed above.
