All-Black ‘Golden Girls’ Revival Starring Tracee Ellis Ross Airing Tonight

Tracee Ellis Ross, Sanaa Lathan, Alfre Woodard and Regina King to Star in All-Black 'Golden Girls'

The Golden Girls” is being revived for a brief TV return with an all-Black cast.

On Monday it was announced that Tracee Ellis RossRegina King, Sanaa Lathan and Alfre Woodard would add a bit of color to the beloved characters.

The stars shared a promo photo on social media featuring the original “Golden Girls” stars, along with an image of their own faces animated over them.

The beloved series aired on NBC from 1985 to 1992 and starred Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as four older women living together in Miami.

For the revival, Ross will star as Rose, King as Dorothy, Woodard as Sophia and Lathan as Blanche.

Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct the reimagining, which will be and hosted by Lena Waithe.

According to the event page, the virtual watch party is in partnership with Zoom and is free so as long as viewers register in advance.

“Join us for an evening that takes a look back to the sitcoms of yesteryear – Before you could pause your screens or binge watch. We bring to you our rendition of Golden Girls, reimagined with an all-black cast of your favorite actresses,” the description for the event reads.

The cast will assemble for the one-night performance on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. PT., as part of a series called “The Zoom Where it Happens.”

The event supports the racial justice organization Color of Change.

“In an effort to further engage our community and drive change, all you need to do to enjoy this evening is sign up to receive messages about how you can make a change during this election,” the sign-up page says. “This event is in partnership with Zoom, and the first episode is spotlighting and supporting Color of Change — the nation’s largest online racial justice organization.”
