Michaela Coel To Star In Her Sexual Assault Inspired Series For HBO ‘I May Destroy You’ [TEASER]

*HBO released has released the teaser for its new half-hour series “I May Destroy You,” created, written by and starring British actress Michaela Coel (“Chewing Gum”).

The series explores sexual consent and the distinction between liberation and exploitation.

The HBO synopsis states:

Arabella Essiuedu (Coel) — easily distracted, non-committal, and carefree — finds herself feted as the ‘voice of her generation,’ with an agent, a book commission and a helluva lot of pressure. After being sexually assaulted in a nightclub, her life changes irreversibly and Arabella is forced to reassess everything: her career, her friends, even her family. As Arabella struggles to come to terms with what has happened, she begins a journey of self-discovery.

The series is executive produced by Coel for FALKNA Productions and will premiere on HBO this summer. Watch the teaser above.

Alongside Coel the series will also star Weruche Opia, Paapa Essiedu, Aml Ameen, Adam James, Sarah Niles, Ann Akin, Harriet Webb, Ellie James, Franc Ashman, Karan Gill, Natalie Walter, and Samson Ajewole.

Coel has had her own experience with the show’s subject matter, as she previously revealed that she was sexually assaulted as she was writing the award-winning comedy “Chewing Gum” in 2018, per essence.com.

In an interview with Deadline, she said, “like any other experience I’ve found traumatic, it’s been therapeutic to write about it, and actively twist a narrative of pain into one of hope, and even humor.”

“I May Destroy You” debuts on HBO in June.
