THE REAL: Meghan Trainor on Her ‘Dream Come True’ of Bringing Nicki Minaj Out of Retirement!

On Thursday, Jan. 30, “The Real” hosts discuss the viral video of a woman receiving backlash from bystanders after telling two Korean immigrants on a bus to speak English.

Co-host Jeannie Mai feels that it is racist to insist that people must speak English, while co-host Adrienne Houghton thinks that many aren’t empathetic enough to the immigrant experience. Co-host Amanda Seales explains why she is always so vocal about racism, and co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley urges the public to become allies to immigrants in our country.

Later, Meghan Trainor drops in to talk about her new album Treat Myself and how she brought Nicki Minaj out of retirement to perform on her new single while accomplishing a dream from her career bucket list. She also takes part in an incredibly revealing game of “Meghan’s Must-Haves”!

Then in honor of The Real’s upcoming 1000th episode, the ladies take some time to reminisce about one of their most outrageous moments and view a clip from Season One of Adrienne displaying her artistic ability of using her best “assets” to paint!

How Meghan Trainor Brought Nicki Minaj Out Of Retirement

Jeannie Mai: You brought out Nicki Minaj out of retirement!

Loni Love: Yes!

Jeannie: Explain this!

(The Real audience applauds)

Meghan Trainor: Well…

Jeannie: Come on. Come on.

Meghan: Um… She… yeah… I think that was just like a fun tweet one day. I- I- She, thank God, didn’t retire. Um, and she…

Jeannie: Tell us what happened.

Meghan: Well, I wrote this song and we knew, like, ok this was the best one. We gotta run with this as a single. Then my management started managing her. And I was like, “Do you think that, like, we can play it for her? I don’t know.” And then they did, and I was, like, that’s just a bucket list dream come true if she even hears my song. And they say she likes it and wanted to, like, write a rap to it. I was like…

Loni: Aw.

Meghan: I cried.

Adrienne Houghton: That’s amazing!

Tamera Mowry-Housley: Crazy!

Amanda Seales: What was it like?

Meghan: Unbelievable! And we actually shot a music video together and I was, like, freaking out. Like, more nervous than being at the Grammys. This was my moment and I was…

Jeannie: Tell us something you learned about her on set at your video.

Meghan: Um… That she’s, like, funny and really chill and hilarious. I made her laugh and I was like…

Tamera: Oh My Gosh!

Meghan: Oh my God, I’m funny!

(The Real audience applauds)

Meghan: But, she’s like, also… she’s so real. She’s so real. Like, I wanted to get- I wanted to say one thing to her and I was like, “You’re an amazing songwriter. Like, everything you do is amazing. But, I just want to tell you from songwriter to songwriter, you’re amazing.” And she high-fived me and I was, like, “Oh my God! This is my moment!”
