“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” the third installment of the franchise, returns with a $14 million contract on Wick’s head. As bounty hunters converge, you best believe the carnage is relentless. When Wick wages war on his opponents, he takes no prisoners.
Although brutal and bloody, the fights are stylized. Stylized or not, the perpetual blood baths border on the Law of Diminishing Returns. Adrenaline junkies, nonetheless, will delight in the non-stop clashes.
An awesome asset to the John Wick universe is Halle Berry as the mysterious Sofia. Berry’s kick-ass performance comes as no surprise having starred as an empowered woman in the “X-Men” franchise, “Catwoman,” and “Die Another Day.” But even Berry is upstaged by her assassin dogs that are sight to behold.
Directed by Derek Kolstad, “John Wick 3” also stars Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillion, Lance Reddick, Angelica Huston, and Ian McShane.
‘The Sun Is Also A Star’
“The Sun Is Also a Star,” is a bright and uplifting film, the much-needed kind in these trying times. In this modern day love story, Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi) and College-bound romantic Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) meet randomly one day.
Bae is convinced Natasha is “the one,” especially when he sees “Deus Ex Machina” emblazoned on the back of her jacket. Bae tells Natasha he can make her fall in love with him within 24 hours.
The black excellence that Natasha possesses is rarely scene onscreen. Poised to go to college, she has great grades and takes AP (Advanced Placement) chemistry courses. Although skeptical about Bae’s claims, Natasha takes him up on his offer to make her fall in love with him.
“The Sun Is not a Star” is not just a roller coaster romance. It speaks to the problem many immigrants face in this country. The relationship aspect of the story reflects that of acclaimed bestseller author Nicola Yoon. She is Jamaican-American and her husband is Korean-American. The movie “Everything, Everything” was also based on a Yoon bestseller reviewed here two years ago: https://eurweb.com/2017/05/weekend-watch-everything-everything-is-just-that-alien-and-wimpy-kid-luke-warm/
Directed by Ry Russo-Young, “The Sun Is a Star,” also stars John Leguizamo, Hill Harper, Camrus Johnson, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Miriam A. Hyman, and, Cathy Shim.
