*“Hotel Mumbai” terrifies and “Dumbo” flies once again. It’s unfortunate that such a riveting and mesmerizing movie such as “Mumbai,” that recounts the pain and suffering of those affected by the Taj Mahal Hotel massacre in Mumbai, India give those cowards the immortality they sought. “Hotel Mumbai,” based on true events, tells the 2008 story of sadistic terrorists and dedicated hotel workers.
Chef Hemant Oberoi (Anupam Kher) and Dev Patel risk their lives to protect hotel guests. An affluent couple (Armie Hammer and Nazanin Boniadi) make sacrifices to protect their baby boy. And even the boorish billionaire Jason Isaacs display acts of heroism.
Directed by Anthony Maras, “Hotel Mumbai” also stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and Amandeep Singh.
‘Dumbo’
No spoiler here, but the baby elephant Dumbo from the 1941 animated movie flies onscreen once again. With expressive blue eyes, Dumbo seeks to melt hearts. Call me a cynic, but I’m not buying. With all the 21st century cinematic accouterments, emotional investment in the characters is lacking.
What is interesting and made me wonder, “Who’s your Mama,” was Milly Farrier, played by Nicole N. Parker, the daughter of Colin Farrell (Holt). Parker is the daughter of black British actress Thandie Newton and director/producer/writer Ol Parker. Michael Keaton, in another standout role, brought evil character V.A. Vandermere to life in all his wickedness.
In this live-action version, circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier his children Milly and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for Dumbo, a newborn elephant with oversized ears. When it’s discovered Dumbo can fly, the struggling circus catches the attenton of persuasive entrepreneur Vandermere.
Directed by Tim Burton, the film also stars Eva Green, Deobia Oparei, and Alan Arkin.
