(UPDATE) Teen Snatched by Group of Men in Bronx Found Safe, Admits She Staged Kidnapping

Karol Sanchez

UPDATE: Well, well, well — we told you there was something fishy about this story.

*A 16-year-old girl who was kidnapped by a group of men in the Bronx Monday night has been found safe and unharmed, the NYPD confirmed. But sources claim the teen confessed to staging the whole thing to escape her strict mother, CBS2 reports.

“WE HAVE A VICTORY TODAY !! Karol has been found !!! Thank you to all who have worked very hard to track down the people involved in this case !!!” the 4oth precinct said on Twitter.

Karol Sanchez, 16, was walking with her mother along Eagle Avenue near East 156th Street, at about 11:20 p.m. Monday when a beige four-door sedan pulled up on them and two men exited, grabbing the teenager and dragging her inside the vehicle. They pushed her mother to the ground as she tried to protect her daughter.

The shocking moment lasted about 10 seconds and was captured on surveillance video.

Two other men were in the vehicle. The group fled the scene and are described as four Black males in their 20s, wearing dark clothing. We previously reported that no arrests have been made and that the group of men are wanted for questioning.

But in surprising twist, the apparent kidnapping was staged by Sanchez, who confessed to it after being reunited with her family Tuesday.

“I heard screeching of tires,” said witness Damon Doughty, New York Daily News reports. “I went to the window and when I got there there were three people in a car and the guy in the backseat was kicking the mom out of the back seat. Then they grabbed the daughter back into the car because it looked like she tried to get away. Then the car sped off. She (the victim’s mother) ran and she was screaming. She was just screaming and yelling.”

The mother was not hurt during the struggle with the kidnappers.

“It was frightening. She was screaming on the sidewalk and I couldn’t understand what she was screaming about,” said Mildred Watson.

“I am frightened and worried. They tell us to walk in couples but being in couples doesn’t help nowadays, not even being in groups. I’m getting my gun license back. It’s time to leave New York. “

Further details of Karol’s safe return were not provided initially, sparking speculation that there was more to this tale than what was being reported. Family issues seem to be the root of her unhappiness.

“We was at the pole over there, looking at her picture, and we walked up the block, she was crossing the street to the cop car, and I was like ‘Yo, that’s her right there,’” said Tommy Feliciano.

“She was shaken up. She was bending over, grabbing her knees, and discussing with the police. And that’s when they took her into the parking garage for questioning,” Zani Koxha said.
