Actor, director, playwright and filmmaker Tyler Perry is putting his iconic character Madea out to pasture. Perry made the announcement last year that he would be ending Madea with a final play tour and film.
“I’m happy to kill that old b*tch, I’m tired, man,” Perry said on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show “Bevelations”
The 11th and final film of the franchise will be released on March 1st. Madea’s Family Funeral invites the audience along for a family reunion that turns into a nightmare as Madea and her crew travel to backwoods Georgia, where they unexpectedly end up planning a funeral that stirs up dirty family secrets.
EURweb’s Jill Munroe sat down with Perry to discuss what he will miss about playing the feisty, foul-mouthed Madea, how he navigates changes in the comedy genre and how he plans to select his next project.
On what he’ll miss about playing Madea:
“I never expected it to go this long, I’m grateful for every minute of it. What I will miss most is the reaction of the fans and how much they love and care about her. So no, I’m not going to miss it, but I will miss that reaction for sure.”
On if he is worried about news changes to comedy standards:
No, Madea is politically [sic] non-correct, but she’s always safe. I go close to the line but not cross it. Nothing is done maliciously or out of contempt to try and hurt someone, it’s all done out of love.
The film will is also the last collaboration between Perry and Lionsgate. Perry has signed a deal with Viacom for content across various platforms.
