The Journal of Steffanie Rivers: The Evolution Of Consciousness

*If you have ever had dreams to do anything great in your life you learned early on to set goals and have a plan to turn those dreams into reality. Some people pick their dreams early in their childhood. They choose a plan of action and they work that plan. Wanna be pro athletes start by joining little league teams. Wanna be entertainers take every opportunity to be on stage. And wannabe political leaders are in constant campaign mode.

So imagine after years of practicing your craft and following a plan for your life that you thought was going to lead to the recognition for which you have worked so hard you are met with ridicule instead of praise.

Recent medical research shows continuous hits to the head could – and have – cause(d) brain damage in retired NFL players, regardless of their protective head-gear. For some players, that evidence is enough for them to move on from the game and retire early. But for most players it’s not that simple. For them, changing course is as tough as turning the Titanic.

And when a rapper, who has worked most of his life to make it to the main stage, is offered the chance to perform during the Super Bowl half-time show, there aren’t many entertainers who would turn it down unless he felt his reach already has outgrown what Super Bowl half time exposure could do for his career. There are only a handful of people in that position.

So when I hear about people who condemned Travis Scott for performing during the Super Bowl halftime show instead of turning down the opportunity they failed to consider the following:

  1. Some of the same entertainers who tried to dissuade Scott from performing this year were begging to be on that same stage a few years ago. Sure, their support for social causes might have grown, but everybody’s level of consciousness doesn’t start or end at the same place. Just as a baby has to crawl before she walks, we have to accept people where they are.
  2. There are different ways to protest. Some people march or kneel. Others boycott and withdraw financial support. Most people act tough on social media, but ask them to get off the couch, join the march or the boycott or to turn down a paycheck in support of a social cause and that support probably will disappear.

         3. Most people don’t have the vision or work ethic to create a goal and work towards turning their vision                  into reality. Since they’ve never worked towards a goal they have no idea what they’re asking someone to              give up.

Sure, all money ain’t good money, but unless people are willing to replace the paycheck and opportunity costs they are asking you to pass up, chances are their opinions mean little to nothing. Don’t allow someone else’s convictions to dictate how you live your life. We are all works in progress.
