Taj Jackson Slams ‘Apollo’ Doc Over Exclusion of Jackson Family

*Taj Jackson, nephew of late singer Michael Jackson, has slammed the recently released HBO documentary “The Apollo” over its exclusion of the infamous family and the Jackson 5

“How dare you erase black music history. Where is the Jackson 5? The group you helped launch on your stage. Black artists and celebs need to take note. This can happen to you too in the future. Not just my family, I’m so disappointed. Did @HBO @HBODocs make you edit them out,” he tweeted.

Weaving together archival footage of music, comedy and dance performances with behind-the-scenes verité footage of the team that makes the theater run, the film features interviews with such artists as Angela Bassett, Common, Jamie Foxx, Doug E. Fresh, Savion Glover, Patti LaBelle, Paul McCartney, Smokey Robinson, and Pharrell Williams. Parallel to the historical narrative, THE APOLLO examines the current state of race in America, chronicling the multimedia stage adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ acclaimed Between the World and Me as it comes together on the theater’s grand stage.

As noted by Page Six, the Jackson 5 won its “amateur night” in 1967 at the theater, and one of Jackson’s last public performances was at the Apollo when he performed at a DNC fund-raiser for Bill Clinton in 2002.

The Jackson’s estate and HBO are currently embattled in a $100 million lawsuit over the airing the Emmy-winning documentary “Leaving Neverland” — in which two men claim Jackson molested them when they were kids. The estate denied the allegations.
