Racism and Classism Within LGBT Communities

*Would you believe if we were to tell you that a little more than half of all minority ethnic and Asian groups in the LGBT community experience poor treatment and discrimination? If these statistics weren’t harsh enough to cause any double-takes, then you should know that about every 3 in 5 Black queer persons report having been discriminated against within the LGBT community.

Pushed Under the Carpet

While there seems to be a lot of conversation about how the wider society needs to accept the LGBT community, they seem to completely ignore the fact that gay sub-cultures exist. While the world is slowly moving further away from homophobia, they are pushing the fact that the LGBT community could also discriminate against members of its own community.

Declining Uninvited Advances

It is quite common to be told to “go back home!” in broad daylight in the midst of a well-known LGBT area in a city. These racist comments are usually fired after some drunken or uninvited advances from white gay individuals. Even though these people may not have any entitlement over our bodies – or even our sexuality for that matter – they show a hostile entitlement over their country.

Gay Dating Apps

The very same can be seen in the case of gay online dating apps. It not uncommon to come across profiles that read ‘No Asians’ or ‘No Blacks’ in their captions. Here people may also portray subtly racism by claiming that the other was ‘Too cute to be an Asian’.

This very stupefying arrogance of some people within the LGBT community is what catches most of us by surprise. Our ethnicities are who we are and it has nothing to do with our sexuality and terms in a relationship. Right now, all we can do is keep the ‘block’ button handy!

The Origins of the Pride Movement Are Being Lost

Belonging to the above-described LGBT communities can result in individuals facing bigotry from every side. This leaves us with no safe space and we are easily surrounded by micro-aggressions and everyday judgments.

This is what non-white member of the LGBT community has to go through on a daily basis. Also, it goes without saying that it will take great efforts for these people to recover from such experiences. Help the LGBT communities diversify and accept all ethnicities.
