Olivia Wilde (‘Booksmart’) on Her Directorial Debut and Why This is A Woman’s World – WATCH

YouTube video

*Who runs the World? GIRLS! And Olivia Wilde! This has been the season of women and women doing their thing, and this is defiantly Olivia’s season. The actress can now add director to her resume, making “Booksmart” her directorial debut.

“BookSmart” is a new female driven buddy comedy about two Academic overachievers, (Amy) Kaitlyn Dever and (Molly) Beanie Feldstein who feel like they wasted their whole lives by keeping their heads in the books and now want to go on one last adventure to live up their best high school life before they graduate and head to college.

“Booksmart” is in a league of their own! With two female leads and a comedy about high school kids, the “Superbad” comparisons were automatic. But after watching the film, that went straight out the window. The movie also bought in a female writer, female cinematographer, female’s producers and a female post team.

EURweb associate Nakia Monet sat down with Olivia and they discussed why this film is the best film of 2019. When asked about why she decided to pick “Booksmart” as her directional debut, she said

“I wanted to direct the same kind of movie that I loved to watch. I wanted to make something that felt kind of fresh and authentic, something that I could have fun stylistically playing with. I wanted to tell a story about kindness and friendship and devotion to one another. A story about women having each other’s backs which I think is really important right now”

Wilde also added, “We had so many amazing women working on this movie and it felt like everyone of us was putting in our own experience as women, our own female relationships, what we grew up, the confusion we experienced as adolescents, we were all putting into the movie”

“Booksmart” will be everywhere in theaters from May 24.
