Kamala Harris Says Young Black Men Jailed for Selling Pot ‘Were Ahead of the Curve’

U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris

*Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has spoke about the injustice done to young black men who were locked up during the so called drug war for selling marijuana.

Appearing on “She The People,” the California senator noted how those impacted are now prohibited from participating in the legal marijuana industry — adding that “they were ahead of the curve,” Raw Story reports.

“A lot of the people who were arrested for marijuana sales were young men, young men of color,” Harris said.

“Isn’t that the irony of it all, that now this is one of the fastest growing money-making industries in our country,” she continued. “The very young men who were trying to make money doing the same thing, but got criminalized and have been branded felons for life are excluded from the economic opportunities that are now available because of this new industry.”

“Some of those young men should be first in line to get the jobs that are available,” Harris said.

“Their felony convictions should not be the barrier to them having employment in an industry they were a part of before it was an industry.”

“They were ahead of the curve, she added.

Meanwhile, Harris has chosen women of color to drive her presidential campaign, consisting of 19 senior staffers 13 of which are women, and 11 of those are women of color.

“We don’t have enough women who are making the decisions about what public policy will be,” Harris tells CNN during her Iowa swing, via MSN. “We need greater representation. All of America benefits from that and certainly my campaign does, which is why I made it a focus.”

Her campaign manager Juan Rodriguez says “It’s important that our staff looks like America.”

Adding, “Sen. Harris has a history of elevating and amplifying all voices to ensure that nothing is seen through only one narrow point of view, and she’s ensuring that her campaign not only employs people from diverse backgrounds, but makes them key decision-makers.”
