*A private service for director John Singleton was held in Los Angeles on Monday where family and friends including Ice Cube, Stevie Wonder and Congresswoman Maxine Waters were among those who turned out to pay their respects at the Angelus Funeral Home.
Media was not allowed inside the service, which reportedly lasted about two hours.
“Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler was among those mourning the “Boyz in the Hood” director, as well as, Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth Carter, “Straight Outta Compton” director F. Gary Gray, football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, rapper Ludacris, and actors Ving Rhames, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Taraji P. Henson and Tyrese, USA Today reports.

The service came a week after Singleton’s family announced his passing at age 51, days after he suffered a stroke. A family statement said he died after being taken off life support on March 29, but his death certificate lists the date of his death as March 28.
The director’s film credits included 1993’s “Poetic Justice,” 2000’s “Shaft” and 2005’s “Four Brothers,” and he was the co-creator of the current FX television series “Snowfall,” which was one of the last projects Singleton was working on before his death. His name will continue to be listed as executive producer on the hit FX drama, according to TMZ.
Singleton was reportedly laid to rest at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills on Monday.
The director’s mother Shelia Ward filed court documents Friday that included Singleton’s 1993 will, which names his daughter, Justice Singleton, as sole heir of a vast majority of his property.
At the time the will was drafted, Justice was his only child. Singleton later had four more children. According to TMZ, now his kids are all embroiled in conflict over their father’s estate, which is reportedly worth around $35 million. The outlet reports that all have lawyered up over as they’re ready to battle it out.
Meanwhile, Singleton’s family is planning a public memorial with details to be announced soon.
