Janelle Monae Tapped to Replace Julia Roberts in ‘Homecoming’ Season 2

Janelle Monáe performs during day five of Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 30, 2019 in Glastonbury, England.

*Actress-singer Janelle Monae has been tapped to take over Julia Roberts’ leading role in the Amazon drama “Homecoming.”

“Homecoming” is a psychological thriller based on the podcast of the same name created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. The series centers on soldiers back from war and the shady government and corporate entities that are interested in conducting experiments on them.

Roberts says she was captivated when her agents sent her the podcast. “I felt like it hearkened to the radio shows, where everyone sits around in the living room just listening, and I thought it was done so well,” she said in a 2018 interview with EW. “It was so evocative.”

Variety describes Monae’s still-unnamed character as “a tenacious woman who finds herself floating in a canoe, with no memory of how she got there or who she is,” via Collider

The artist noted on Twitter that she is “Excited and ready for this wild ride.”

Season two will further explore the storyline that was set up in season one, and if you haven’t watched the first season, we won’t spoil it for you –but it’s a must watch if you like character-driven drama and intrigue.

“Homecoming” was Roberts’ first TV series regular role and she will stay on board as an executive producer under her Red Om Films banner.  She only had a one-season deal to lead the cast of the show.

Monae next appears in a supporting role in “Harriet,” starring Cynthia Erivo and she’ll lend her voice to the live-action remake of Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp,” starring Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux.
