*The BET awards weekend is normally an event packed with parties back to back, but this year, Jason Lee – blogger and creator of Hollywood Unlocked – took a different approach with his first annual Social Impact Awards and Brunch. He decided to take the time to honor those in the industry making an impact mostly using their celebrity and social media platforms.
The honorees were Cardi B, Tiffany Hadish, Floyd Mayweather, Nick Cannon, Karen Clark Sheard, The Breakfast Club and the late Nipsey Hussle.
I asked Jason why he chose to have a brunch celebrating his peers and he says “I feel like it was an important opportunity to bring us all together to celebrate.”
His Hollywood Unlocked co-host Melissa Ford added “People who are using social media to impact the lives of others to speak for the voiceless. Recognition needs to be awarded.”

The Brunch wasn’t only about the celebrities that were honored. We talked to rapper Sage The Gemini, Laura Govan (“Basketball Wives”) and actress Taja V Simpson about their upcoming projects.
Sage The Gemini is currently working on his new album that will feature a song with Chris Brown, which Sage says is the greatest accomplishment in his career thus far.
Laura Govan talks about breaking into the acting industry: “I was doing some stuff overseas, but yeah it’s interesting to come here and do it and be amongst my peers.”
Taja V Simpson who has starred in several Tyler Perry films will be starring in Tyler Perry’s new scripted drama, “The Oval,” set to air on BET. We can’t have the Obama’s back but I wouldn’t mind seeing a first black family on TV, we get a chance to step out of our current reality.
For now, let’s step back into the Social Impact Brunch. As I mentioned before, I believe the brunch was a positive different approach to the BET weekend so I asked everyone how they would make an impact. Make sure you watch the above video for everyone’s answers.
