*Several far-right Christian fundamentalists are claiming the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland was the work of God for opposing President Donald Trump.

When Christian fundamentalist Stacey Shiflett appeared on Chris McDonald’s program “The MC Files,” she expressed her belief that Trump was sent by God to govern America and that Cummings helped lead a “cooked, deceptive, demonic attempt” to remove Trump from office, per salon.com.

Shiftlett said of Cummings, “Everything that he’s done has been nothing but trying to take this president out. I believe that God had had enough, and God moved.”

Christian fundamentalist Dave Daubenmire described the House Oversight Committee chairman as an “enemy of the cross” and added, “Maybe he didn’t know Jesus.” Daubenmire went on to say, “I haven’t been sitting around praying that Elijah Cummings would die. But now that he did, I’m glad he’s gone . . . I bet he’s not pro-choice now. I bet he’s not pro-homo now.”

Radio host Jesse Lee Peterson noted that Cummings dared to take on “the Great White Hope” and paid for it with his life.

“If you notice, John McCain, he dead. Charles Krauthammer, he dead. And Elijah Cummings, now he dead. They all didn’t like ‘The Great White Hope;’ they went against him, they talked about him. Now, they all dead. That’s amazing,” Peterson said. He also warned Trump opponents, “Don’t mess with ‘The Great White Hope.’ You see what happens. Don’t mess with God’s children.”

We previously reported, the body of Cummings will lie in state in the National Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol this week and a funeral will be held in Baltimore on Friday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office said in a news release that a formal ceremony open to members of Congress, the Cummings family and invited guests will be held Thursday morning, followed by a public viewing, per The Associated Press.

A wake and funeral is planned the following day at Cummings’ longtime place of worship, New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore. Morgan State University will also host a public viewing Wednesday.

The Democratic congressman from Maryland died early Thursday morning at Gilchrist Hospice Care, a Johns Hopkins affiliate in Baltimore. He was 68.
