Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson Talk Roles in ‘Doctor Sleep’

*The new Warner Bros. film “Doctor Sleep” is an adaptation of Stephen King’s 2011 follow-up to The Shining and also serves as a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film classic.

The film stars Ewan McGregor (Star Wars episodes I, II and III) as Dan Torrance. Still traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child and now a full-blown alcoholic, his desire to run away from his issues is shattered when he meets Abra – portrayed by newcomer Kyliegh Curran – a teen who shares his extrasensory gift of the “shine.”

The two form an unlikely alliance for a life and death battle against the ruthless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson -The Mission Impossible franchise) and the True Knot, a cult whose members try to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.

McGregor, Ferguson and the film’s writer/director Mike Flanagan talked with EURweb’s Jill Munroe about creating an extension of such an iconic film, the dark subtext of our “thoughts” holding us back and how “Doctor Sleep” stands as a companion to the original “Shinning.”

McGregor on taking on another role in a continuation of an iconic franchise:

“at the moment there’s so many movies based on other movies, and I didn’t know that Stephen King had written this novel. So at first, I was a little skeptical… I thought are we making up a follow-up movie to “The Shinning.” But once I understood that Stephen King had written this novel and that he wanted to take Danny, his mom and some new characters – and follow them forward, then I was much more interested. He’s written a very beautiful book. I think he wrote “The Shinning” about alcohol and addiction, I believe he wrote ‘Doctor Sleep’ about recovery. When you start thinking about them as I was lead to do by Mike (Flanagan,) then it became very interesting to me.”

Doctor Sleep hits theaters November 8.
