*Rapper and activist Common appeared on the second episode of Nat Geo’s six-part documentary series “Activate: The Global Citizen Movement,” which focused on the New York’s cash bail system and how it impacts the poor and people of color.
Common’s episode aired Thursday night, showing him at the Brooklyn Detention Complex where he bailed out a stranger who couldn’t afford it.
Usher was also featured on the episode, which highlighted activists who have “been instrumental in pushing through New York state’s bail reform” and explored “flaws in the current cash bail system and why we need to end it,” per New York Daily News.

Each episode of Procter & Gamble and National Geographic’s docuseries tackles different issues of inequality and chronicles a call to action. Artists featured in the series include: Hugh Jackman, Gayle King, Pharrell Williams and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Common and Usher teamed up with Global Citizen and grassroots organizers “to attempt to achieve historic criminal justice reform by ending the use of cash bail in New York state.”
“People sitting in jail just because you don’t have the money … it’s not what justice is supposed to be,” the rapper said. “Justice shouldn’t be based on finance, justice should be based on justice.”
“Activate: The Global Citizen Movement” airs at 9 p.m. Thursdays on National Geographic channel.
