Colin Kaepernick: Former 49er Settles Collusion Case with NFL

*The NFL and former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick have settled a case that accused the league of colluding to keep him off a team.

The quarterback was blacklisted after he ignited a protest movement against police brutality by kneeling during the playing of the national anthem at games. The league responded by shutting him out; as he has not played since the 2016 season. Kap fired back by filing his grievance in October 2017.

The league also settled a similar claim lodged by player Eric Reid, a former 49ers safety, who supported and participated in the kneeling protest and went unsigned before playing last season for the Carolina Panthers. He continued to kneel during the 2018 season.

In a joint statement, the parties said: “For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL. As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party.”

Kaepernick and Reid both shared a copy of the statement on their respective Twitter accounts.

The terms of the settlements were not disclosed. Kaepernick’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, also issued a similar statement — see below.

The NFL Players Association, the labor union that represents league players, released its own statement:

“Today, we were informed by the NFL of the settlement of the Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid collusion cases. We are not privy to the details of the settlement, but support the decision by the players and their counsel,” the NFLPA said.

“We continuously supported Colin and Eric from the start of their protests, participated with their lawyers throughout their legal proceedings and were prepared to participate in the upcoming trial in pursuit of both truth and justice for what we believe the NFL and its clubs did to them. We are glad that Eric has earned a job and a new contract, and we continue to hope that Colin gets his opportunity as well.”

By settling with Colin, do you think the NFL basically admitted to his accusations of collusion to keep him from playing?
