*Mondays in September will take you to Memphis!

Bluff City Law” is NBC’s upcoming legal drama set in a family law firm famous for taking on injustice. EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas met with Michael Luwoye, who plays one of the lawyers – Anthony Little  – in Tennessee and talked about Beyonce, Pikachu and auditions.

EUR: What meme or gif do you use the most?

ML: A slow Pikachu or my favorite gif is the one with Rafiki tossing Simba off of Pride Rock. It’s a little dark. Did you see [the 2019 remake of] “The Lion King?” Thoughts?

EUR: Yes. What are your thoughts?

ML: Honest thoughts! I asked first, what are your honest thoughts?

EUR: The music was really, really good!

ML: Is that the equivalent of saying somebody has nice shoes or nice hair? Like if you can’t say
anything nice, don’t say anything at all?

EUR: Simba and Timon were amazing!

ML: I went in with the lowest expectations, just because I knew it wasn’t going to be the original. It can’t be. There’s no way, so it’s going to be whatever it is. I loved the animation and everything. I think that that’s going to be great for some future movie. I didn’t understand why there was a montage of new Beyonce songs… Somebody else pointed out that “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” was [sang] in the daytime, which was interesting. We were all making jokes. I was like, “I didn’t know Pride Rock was in Houston. Because Beyonce… Overall it was better than I thought it was going to be, but it is its own movie.

EUR: Speaking of music and singing; David (Janollari) mentioned you might be using some of
your vocal talent on the show…

ML: I sang today in episode four. We’re in a recording studio and it’s mentioned that I sing at church. I got to sing a little bit of the hymn, “He Leadeth Me”, which is my mom’s favorite. It was really awesome! It was originally going to be “Amazing Grace” or “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” but we thought those would be a little too heavy for the show.

EUR: David also mentioned he knew you would be really great at playing this character because acting in theater is similar to being an attorney. How did you feel during your audition?

ML: I felt very strange while auditioning because I didn’t really have a good notion of what being a lawyer was. But once I got cast in the role I went [and heard some] cases in Brooklyn. I’d sit inside the courtroom and just watch. I joked that court is like a baby or the child of theater or C-SPAN, like it can be very boring or exciting…it’s very strung out and drawn out. I’m excited to do court scenes whenever we get to because of the engagement. It’s like a chess match, you want to play with another person, you’re trying to outsmart the other side.
