*Tune in tonight to “Bluff City Law” on NBC!

The law show addresses universal civil topics and stars MaameYaa Boafo (“The Blacklist” and “Chicago Med”) who talked to EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas about hate crimes and life on set.

Q: Have any of the cases covered in “Bluff City Law” been particularly compelling to you?

MB: [Yes, episode five talks about hate crimes]. I don’t want to give it away, but during one scene I asked to sit down with the producers and explain why it was important for my character to be in the courtroom when the case [was being presented] and they added me to the scene. [I don’t have a lot of lines] but I’m excited because it’s all about the action. I’m really appreciative the writers and producers sat down with someone like me – the newbie out of everyone – and took what I had to say into consideration. It’s wonderful to feel heard. I’m only going to pull that card when I feel it’s important for Brianna’s presence, voice or opinion to be a part of [certain] cases.

Q: What have you learned while you were on set working on the show?

MB: Don’t be afraid to ask for a redo. To say ‘can we do it again’ after we do a scene because it’s your time at that moment. It’s a fun environment and there’s a lot of freedom, there’s permission to just be.

I’m all the way here in Memphis for a reason. I can only eat so much catfish. I [go to] work, even on the days when I’m not working. I go to set and watch. Y’all know Charlayne Woodard? THE Charlayne Woodard! Yesterday, she had a scene where she didn’t say much – it was a reaction to something that happened in episode four…[Watching her] was a master class in acting. There’s no way I would have been able to see that had I not been there. I’m learning so much and feel [like some of this is] a part of my social activism…Watching what’s taking place because of what the show stands for.
