Depression Inspires Baltimore Entrepreneur (Demi Carpenter) to Launch Fashion Brand

*Baltimore, MDDemiRe, a fashion collection created by Demi Carpenter of Baltimore, Maryland, is for women who are aware of the latest fashion trends and are unafraid to embrace their individuality.

Just like many entrepreneurs, Demi started her company in her basement. She comments:

“At the time it was a one-man show, but nothing that I couldn’t handle, I’ve handled worse. I designed my very own collection while offering custom-made and styling services all at the age of 20. I also built an evolving fashion house dedicated to connecting with customers and incorporating my passion for fashion became the foundation of the company.”

A minor setback

In 2016, Demi, just a sophomore in college, experienced a traumatic incident on campus and decided to leave school. Struggling to cope with what turned out to be a 3-year battle with depression, made her determined to rediscover the bubbly, independent, ambitious side she once had.

After returning home, she started to feel a little better, but there was more work to be done to restore her confidence. She had to prove that she was capable of doing amazing things, changing lives and that her very own existence mattered. She comments, “Not for everyone else, but I needed to prove it to myself. Now that I wasn’t in school, what was I going to do? Then that’s when it came to me, I was going to start a business!”

Although many may consider her to be a rookie in the fashion industry, she has proven her skills to be top-notch. She is already tackling the clothing market’s dilemma by offering the fastest styling services, mentoring new local fashion entrepreneurs and breaking trends with her bold and stylish collection. All of her pieces promote originality, comfort and style.

Overcoming obstacles

Demi says, “Overcoming depression feels impossible and take months or even years to defeat! Unfortunately, some people often succumb to the battle. Depression is the leading cause of suicide among young adults and will make individuals lose hope, feel confused about their beliefs and identity. I can attest to this very experience.”

But once she started to design her collection for DemiRe, she became happy with her decision to start a business. But she also knew that she needed to connect with her customers on a personal level and had an epiphany!

“My will to fight guided me on the right path to help others. I wanted to help more women embrace their individuality despite their challenges with self-acceptance. Depression made me a completely different person but when I started to keep up with my appearance and find my aesthetic, it definitely helped in ways unimaginable,” Demi says.

DemiRe, takes online shopping to another level and changes the way consumers shop! The brand gives women the option to work with a designer or stylist at a rate they choose, making it accessible to just about everyone, and delivering the clothes right to the clients’ doorstep.
