Disney once again raises it game with “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.” Earlier, Disney’s diversity was on display in the phenomenal “Beauty and the Beast” that starred Emma Watson. This year is no exception. Black kids can now see themselves onscreen in a fantasy world where they were once invisible. And, need I not say how refreshing it is to see prima ballerina Misty Copeland, the first black Principal Ballerina at the American Ballet Theater, as Ballerina Princess.
“The Nutcracker” itself is a hodgepodge of not only different realms but elements from “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Alice in Wonderland.” In “The Nutcracker,” all Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key—a one of a kind key—that will unlock a box that holds a precious gift from her mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight) and the three realms and her fantasy journey unfolds.
Directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, “The Nutcracker” also stars Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, and Matthew MacFadyen.
