*A convenience store clerk in Santa Fe, New Mexico reportedly called 911 to report a 22-year-old college student for being “arrogant and black.”
Cellphone video by Jordan McDowell captured the employee in full racial profiling mode after he went into the store to purchase Sour Patch Kids candy. McDowell, who attends Xavier University, told local station KRQE that the store clerk accused him of being “sketchy” before she called police.
“I want him out of the store right now,” the woman can he heard saying on video while talking to 911. “Because he’s being arrogant, because he’s black.”
The incident took place Friday August 3. Santa Fe Police Department call logs show officers dispatched at 9:19 p.m. to a report of “larceny” at the Allsup’s store on Cerrillos Road. No action was taken against either McDowell or the clerk.
In his video, McDowell says “they said I was sketchy because I picked stuff up, put stuff back.”
He told KRQE: “There’s nothing right about this, there’s nothing right to call the police on someone just because of their skin tone.”
“I just want everyone to know you still have a voice, you can speak up, you still can do your part and that’s what I’m going to continue to do.”
McDowell said he’s in Santa Fe studying Native American culture as part of a summer class.
The store employee would not comment to the station but a manager told the network that the clerk’s behavior was “unacceptable.”
