*The violent death of a 23-year-old lesbian woman in Washington D.C. has ignited the hashtag #sayhername on social media.

Kerrice Lewis was reportedly tied up in her trunk after being kidnapped — shot then burned alive in her car. Her brutal murder occurred days after Christmas — and locals are outraged by the lack of media coverage.

According to The Huff Post, on Thursday, December 28, police responded to a report of gunfire on Adrian Street, just south of G Street. When cops arrived, they found a vehicle on fire and after the fire was put out, officers found a woman inside the trunk, unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds.

By the time D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived, they found “no signs consistent with life.”

Lewis grandfather, William Sharp, told Fox 5 DC that the victim’s mother “died of a brain aneurysm and her father was tragically murdered up in the D.C. area.”

He also shared that Lewis recently served time in jail but was striving to turn her life around.

Sharp said Lewis “was very excited because she had just finished taking some classes and was looking forward to taking some more.”

Mercedes Rouhlac, the victim’s best friend and ex-girlfriend, told WJLA she “talked to her every day,” adding that she “just kept calling her” and wondering why Lewis wasn’t answering her phone.

Heartbroken friends of the victim are disappointed by the lack of media coverage.

One Twitter user wrote. “A young woman was shot & burned alive in DC. Her name is Kerrice Lewis and she mattered. Her butchness, blackness, personhood & memory matters. Challenge racism and homophobia. Help find her killers.”

Another said, “#KerriceLewis #BrandiMells #ShantaMyers – the three #Lesbian women violently murdered over the holidays, with MINIMAL media coverage. They deserve better, from all of us. #SayHerName #SayTheirNames #BlackLivesMatter

Brandi Mells and her girlfriend Shanta Myers were murdered in their home on Dec. 26, along with two of Myers three children. The four victims were found bound with their throats slit.

Police don’t have a suspect or a motive yet in the Kerrice Lewis murder case.
