Oprah Winfrey Becomes One of the World’s 500 Richest People

*Oprah Winfrey just became one of the 500 richest people in the world, as her fortune hit a record $4 billion on Monday, making her the first black female entrepreneur on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The media mogul debuted on the list in June at No. 494 and is now at No. 489, just behind Mark Cuban and Ross Perot.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index updates members’ net worth, based on changes in markets, the economy and Bloomberg reporting, after the close of trading in New York each day.

Winfrey accumulated a net worth of $4 billion thanks to her partnership with Weight Watchers. She bought a 10% stake and became an ambassador for the brand in 2015. Today her stake is worth $427 million.

The bulk of her fortune comes from ownership of OWN, Harpo Films, and her iconic talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which ran from 1986 to 2011.

Last week she announced a partnership with Apple Inc. to produce original programs and content for her network. According to THR, Winfrey will retain ownership rights to any and all content produced under the partnership.

Her inclusion brings the total number of women on the list to 65 and the number of female entrepreneurs to six.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos tops the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $144 billion; followed by Bill Gates with a $92.7 billion fortune; Warren Buffet, who has an $82 billion net worth; and Mark Zuckerberg, whose net worth stands at $79.8 billion.

Winfrey is the subject of a new exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture that explores her impact on storytelling, literature, film, and television. The exhibition, titled “Watching Oprah: The Oprah Winfrey Show and American Culture,” also examines the media magnate’s rags to riches story and illustrious career, per bloomberg.com.
