*A Jamaican dancehall artist has accused Miley Cyrus of stealing his song for her 2013 hit “We Can’t Stop.”
Michael May, aka Flourgon, has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Cyrus, claiming her track was heavily inspired by his song “We Run Things,” which was released in 1988.
In court documents, Flourgon has accused the pop star of stealing his “unique and creative lyrical phraseology” in order to “establish an overarching and pervasive theme… in the realm of self-discovery and self-governings.”
Flourgon, who says his track was a huge hit in the Caribbean, is suing Miley and Sony to block further distribution, sales, and performances of We Can’t Stop, and for compensation to the tune of $300 million.
“We Can’t Stop,” which featured on Cyrus’ album “Bangerz,” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013.
Flourgon claims Cyrus’ song “owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity to and its highly-lucrative success to plaintiff May’s protected, unique, creative and original content.”
