*“Saturday Night Live” got a slight boost in the ratings this weekend with Donald Glover as the host and his alter-ego Childish Gambino as the musical guest.
The first of three new episodes to close out the season averaged a 4.1 Live+same day rating in the metered market households and a 1.8 among adults 18-49 in the markets with local people meters, according to Nielsen. The numbers were up slightly from the season lows posted by “SNL’s” last original episode before the break hosted by John Mulaney (3.9, 1.7 on April 14) to tie as the sketch comedy program’s second lowest results of the season. “SNL” was on par with its year-ago delivery on the same night, 4.1, 1.9 on May 6, 2017.
“SNL” ranked as the #1 entertainment show of the night on the Big 4 networks in metered-market households and in 18-49 in the local people meters, topping the primetime non-sports programs on those nets.
During the show, Glover’s skits took on the lack of black people in outer space, a spoof of the Oran “Juice” Jones hit “The Rain” and a mashup of Kanye West’s recent antics with the film “A Quiet Place”…a skit that apparently tickled ‘Ye.

As Glover was hosting the show, he simultaneously released a mind-blowing video for “This is America,” one of the new tracks he performed on the show as Childish Gambino.
In the four-minute commentary on gun violence, Gambino starts out grooving along to the beat of an acoustic guitar player, only to end up in committing murder, as he grabs a gun and shoots a man in the back of a head. From there, Gambino’s joined by dancing school kids and a gospel choir, who sing until he mows them down with what appears to be a semi-automatic rifle. The refrain continues, as cop cars enter the frame and chaos unfolds around him and the dancers: “This is America / Don’t catch you slippin’ up / Look how I’m livin’ now / Police be trippin’ now / Yeah, this is America / Guns in my area (word, my area) / I got the strap / I gotta carry ’em.”
