*Fox announced on Tuesday that Divorce Court has been renewed through 2019, and the news cements it as TV’s longest-running court show. The series started in 1957 and ran until 1969. It came back from 1985-1992, then returned for its current run in 1999 with host Lynn Toler. The original series used actors that have since been replaced by the real people involved in real cases.
“Divorce Court is one of the most recognizable titles in the court genre, and Lynn Toler is one of that genre’s most trusted judges,” Stephen Brown, Fox Television Stations’ executive vp programming and development, said in a statement. “The cases and drama are real — it’s loud, funny and many times, powerful.”
AdWeek notes that “Divorce Court averages 1.9 million views per month on YouTube. It has over a million likes on Facebook and its videos have over 5 million views. The show has a reach of 4.4 million people as of last week.”
In related news, Judge Lynn Toler was the keynote speaker at Baylor University’s 29th annual Black Heritage Banquet on Feb. 23. Toler “was chosen because of her ability to deliver a powerful and inspiring message to all those in attendance, said Geoffrey Griggs, assistant director of Multicultural Affairs.”
“I hope that from this event, students are able to get at least a nugget of information from Judge Toler to motivate them to make it through the rest of the semester and their collegiate careers,” Griggs said. “Judge Toler has accomplished many things throughout her lifetime, and to place such a positive example like her in front of our students and our community is a wonderful thing.”
Back in 2012, Toler opened up about how “Divorce Court” saved her own marriage, saying: “my “aha moment” on the job didn’t instantly lead to new and better. In fact, I went home and started an argument that lasted for 18 months. But once I got past the anger I started to address my own fears and learned how to communicate effectively. He followed suit because he saw that I had changed in a way that was in his best interests.”
