*With the start of a new year, it makes complete sense that all everyone wants to do is to relax and enjoy their time because they know that problems will definitely catch up with them later on throughout the year.
While all of the people in America and beyond seemed to be having a great time with their new year, two black females faced an abrupt halt to their awesome time together.
Having spent the whole day together, the two women decided to end their day with a scrumptious meal from their restaurant of choice, which happened to be Applebee’s. The restaurant is known for the delicious food and the great service that they offer to their valuable clients, but in recent times, the only reason that the restaurant made headlines was because of the racial profiling that took place there.
As aforementioned, two black females decided to have a nice dinner at Applebee’s and seemed to be enjoying themselves, completely oblivious to what was coming their way. In the middle of the meal that they were enjoying together, two police officers came up to their table and asked them to identify themselves. After that, the officers said that they had been called to ask them to leave politely due to the ‘dine and run’ that they did a night prior to that.

To this the ladies were shocked and surprised and told the officer straight up that this was in fact, the first time that they had come to Applebee’s and that they could prove their whereabouts the previous night. However, the officers insisted that they get up and leave (mid-meal) which of course, is embarrassing for even a person who might be at fault let alone for someone who wasn’t at fault.
Furthermore, the women asked the officer why he didn’t believe them and who was the one who called the police, and the officers responded that they had been called by employees who worked at Applebee’s. Upon questioning what proof they had that they were the two women who ran instead of paying for their meal, the officer told them that the only description given to them was that the women were black and one wore makeup.
This scenario is enough to prove that this was nothing more than a case of serious racial profiling and as a result of this, three Applebee’s employees were fired. Not only was this embarrassing for the two women, but it also showed how shallow people can still be in this day and age.
In other news about Applebee’s, the troubled restaurant chain is announcing that it will be closing another 60 to 80 restaurants this year.
The restaurant’s parent company, Dine Brands Global, said it also plans on closing 30 to 40 additional IHOPs as well.
Dine Brands Global, formerly known as Dine Equity, is transforming their brand and image. That transformation comes on the heels of a $324 million loss in 2017, Fox Business reported. However, according to a press release from Dine Brands Global, the majority of that loss was due to a write-down of Applebee’s goodwill. The company’s 2017 revenue was only down about $30 million from 2016.
Last year, Dine Brands Global closed 99 Applebee’s and 23 IHOPs. In 2016, 46 Applebee’s and 16 IHOPs were closed. However, the company is planning on opening 85 to 100 IHOP locations this year, with an additional 10 to 15 new Applebee’s.
