*Rumors were rampant today [Aug. 31] that designer Virgil Abloh, former creative director for Kanye West, was about to take over at Versace, prompting the fashion house to address the buzz and disappoint all that were hoping it was true.

Glossy’s Jessica Schiffer first reported the gossip based on two anonymous sources. However a Versace rep told The Hollywood Reporter that the buzz is unfounded. Representatives for Off-White and Abloh declined to comment.

Abloh, founder and creative director behind cult-favorite streetwear phenomenon Off-White, has been churning in the rumor mill for the past six months, first with talk that he would fill the creative director gig at Givenchy following the February departure of Riccardo Tisci. Givenchy denied the rumors, and Chloe’s Clare Waight Keller ended up taking the job a few months later.

Via THR:

Off-White has come a long way since Abloh was “discovered” by Kanye West in 2003 and served as the musician/designer’s creative director. The brand is a favorite among hype beasts and editors alike, and has found uber successful collaborations with a range of unexpected (Ikea, Warby Parker) as well as expected (Nike) brands. In addition to helming one of the most talked about brands of the moment, Abloh also finds time to play DJ, too.
