*Although a lot of people might have differing opinions, social issues – counting ethnic issues – are still present and rather more apparent in today’s day and age.
It’s certainly not a surreptitious fact that the best and most operational way to tackle such issues is via good humor – emphasis on good.
For decades on end, television has been good for this very reason – to address the issues prevalent in society and implanted by the people in power.
Many of the shows that you see on television either have dark humor or light, but they all enclose topics that people are either afraid to talk about or just choose not to – yet, at the end of the day, these shows are sure to make you laugh till your stomach hurts! African Americans sitcoms are ideal for this very reason, especially when it comes to portraying the “black experience.”
Here are the top 3 black sitcoms that you should be watching in 2017:
1. Black-ish
Undoubtedly the best black sitcom of the year, Black-ish stars Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson. The entire show is shot using a single camera and is centered on the life of an upper-middle-class family which happens to be African American. The comedy series first premiered in 2014, but was renewed for its fourth season in 2017. The show broadcasts on ABC, but is also available on Netflix, for those who just need some ‘Netflix and chill’ in their lives.
2. Atlanta
Based on the life of two cousins finding their way into the rap scene in Atlanta, the hit comedy television series has positively developed a rather strong fan base. It is created by Donald Glover who is also starring in the series. Their entire journey is based on a step that they have taken in order to better the lives of their loved ones. The show first premiered in 2016 and has been renewed for a second season which will be aired in 2018 on FX. This also gives you time to catch up on season 1 if you haven’t already!
3. Insecure
This epic TV comedy-drama series is not just an HBO original but is also based moderately on Issa Rae’s web series called Awkward Black Girl. The web series itself received a great response for the impressive comedic nature it had. So far, Insecure has aired two seasons: the first one was premiered in 2016, while the second season was premiered this year – after being renewed by HBO. It was renewed once again for the third season which should be expected in early 2018.
