*Earlier we reported that now former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, one of Donald Trump‘s favorite flunkies, had abruptly resigned with no reason given.

Well if you guessed he’d be hooking up with Trump in some capacity, it looks like you might be right. According to The Hill, Sheriff Clarke is expected to join President Trump’s administration, according to a new report.

The site is reporting that two sources familiar with the situation told Politico, which first reported the story, that Clarke is expected to join the Trump administration in a position that is not Senate-confirmed. The former sheriff told Politico that he would “talk about my future plans next week.”

Clarke resigned from his position as sheriff on Thursday. In his resignation letter, Clarke did not provide a reason for his resignation.

“Pursuant to Wis. Stat. 17.01, this communication is submitted as the notice of my resignation as Sheriff of Milwaukee County commencing August 31, 2017,” Clarke wrote in the letter.

Clarke, a strong supporter of President Trump, was reportedly offered a role in Trump’s Department of Homeland Security in June.

The controversial sheriff withdrew from consideration for the role a few weeks later.

Here’s what we reported earlier …

*Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke resigned from his position on Thursday…with no reason given.

Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said that he received a resignation letter from Clarke but that no reason for the move was provided, according to the Associated Press.

In June, Clarke announced that he had rescinded his acceptance of a Homeland Security post. That followed an initial acceptance of a job as assistant secretary in DHS’s Office of Public Engagement. Clarke was supposed to serve as a liaison between DHS and state and local law enforcement.

Clarke, a tough-on-crime conservative Democrat on paper, had become a favorite among conservatives with his provocative social media posts and his blind devotion to Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign. He also spoke at the Republican National Convention last summer.

He was later accused of plagiarism in his master’s thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School. Clarke denied the accusation that he failed to properly attribute his sources at least 47 times in his 2013 thesis, titled “Making U.S. security and privacy rights compatible.”

In an email to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Clarke said that “only someone with a political agenda would say this is plagiarism.”

He also drew criticism for conditions in his jails. A mentally ill inmate allegedly died after being deprived of water as punishment, prosecutors said.

Some Wisconsin conservatives had encouraged Clarke to challenge U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, but he repeatedly rejected their requests.

There was no immediate word on a replacement.
