*Washington, D.C. — Ahead of tonight’s premiere of ABC’s ‘The Mayor,’ Every Voice, Color of Change, and a unique coalition are promoting the newly launched website: IfIWasTheMayor.com.
This site and social campaign are leveraging the visibility and storyline of this top-billed primetime sitcom about a young, black, seemingly unlikely candidate who becomes The Mayor to urge more people from traditionally marginalized communities to envision themselves serving in elected office.
The campaign invites ideas from viewers and followers on what they would do as Mayor if elected, and goes further—with the help of racial justice organizations, democracy reform advocates, and candidate recruitment groups—to connect inspired potential candidates with resources to help them run and to raise awareness about structural barriers preventing a more reflective democracy.
WHO: #IfIWasTheMayor is a project of Every Voice, Color of Change, and a coalition of organizations dedicated to racial justice, social justice, and an accountable and inclusive democracy including Collective PAC, Higher Heights, People’s Action, New American Leaders Project, Run for Something, She Should Run, and Stamp Stamped with support for the campaign from the Pop Culture Collaborative.
WHAT: Launch of the website IfIWasTheMayor.com and #IfIWasTheMayor campaign to encourage more people to envision themselves serving in elected office.
WHEN: ABC’s ‘The Mayor’ premieres today, Tuesday, October 3, 9:30|8:30c.
WHERE: IfIWasTheMayor.com and #IfIWasTheMayor on social media.
